ANGEL ARORA, OTR/L, OTD helps with doing occupational therapy at Miller Orthopedic

Outpatient Occupational Therapy provides customized, individualistic therapeutic services for all age ranges with the goal of achieving maximum functional ability.

  • What do occupational therapists do?
    • An Occupational Therapist treats the entire person. This can range from people recovering from injuries to those who have cognitive disabilities affecting their motor skills, whether they behavioral or emotional. Occupational Therapists work to help people be completely involved and engaged in their daily lives.Occupational Therapy takes a holistic approach that is uncommon in many medical fields. It looks at both the patient’s roles and environment. It includes rehabilitation, habilitation, and overall wellness support.
  • Do I need a doctor’s referral to come to occupational therapy?
    • The short answer is no. Iowa is a direct access state which means all commercial insurances are able to utilize occupational therapy services without a doctor’s referral. If your insurance company requests a doctor’s referral, the OT simply sends a request to your preferred MD with the plan of care and this is taken care of immediately.
  • How do I know if occupational therapy will help?
    • Our occupational therapist has a Doctorate of Occupational Therapy, meaning we have been extensively trained in not only treating and rehabilitating patients but also in finding the cause of those injuries and knowing if occupational therapy is appropriate. If you come to occupational therapy with a problem that is beyond the scope of what occupational therapy can treat, the convenience of Miller Orthopedic Specialists is there are highly skilled orthopedic surgeons just down the hall that may be able to see you the same day.
  • How does Occupational Therapy differ from Physical Therapy?
    • Physical Therapy and Occupational Therapy differ in that Occupational Therapy tends to focus more on bettering the client’s ability to execute tasks and activities in everyday life while the Physical Therapist has more of a focus on bettering the client’s movement of the human body.
  • Can you give an example of when someone would use occupational therapy?
    • An example might be if you hurt your arm playing tennis in your weekly tennis matches with your friends. When you come to occupational therapy we would look not only at helping you recover, but also why you enjoy those weekly tennis matches and whether you like it for the camaraderie, nostalgia, exercise, or something else. Occupational Therapists form connections that make you feel like more than just a patient and help you recover, accomplish goals, and better yourself as a whole.
