Our surgical joint replacement team consists of Dr.’s Clifford (Kent) Boese, Roy Abraham, Inderjit Panesar and physician assistant Theresa Gallo. Dr.’s Miller and Boese are board certified by the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgery, Dr. Panesar is board certified by the American Board of Podiatric Surgery and Theresa is an orthopaedic trained physician assistant. Together they have over 80 years of combined experience in joint replacement surgery.
Miller Orthopaedic offers innovative approaches to total joint replacement surgery. Some of the new techniques we are using on selected patients are mini incision hip and knee replacement, as well as the mobile bearing knee replacement.
Our practice has been offering quality health care to people of all ages throughout southwest Iowa and the Council Bluffs/Omaha metropolitan area since 1972. Today we are clearly one of the leading orthopaedic practices in the Midwest. Our joint replacement program has received a five-star rating at both hospitals in Council Bluffs from Healthgrades, an agency that ranks hospitals nationally on various procedures. Council Bluffs has the only hospitals in the Omaha/Council Bluffs Metropolitan area to receive a five-star rating in both hip and knee replacement surgery.
Dr. Miller was a co-developer with DePuy/Johnson & Johnson of the P.F.C. Sigma R.P. Mobile Bearing Knee. This prosthesis was FDA approved in September of 2001 and has been beneficial to a wider range of patients. The mobile bearing knee can be used for younger, heavier, more active patients. The low friction between the knee components has greatly reduced the wear of this new joint replacement component.
Dr. Boese was the first in Iowa and Nebraska to perform mini incision hip replacement surgery. The once 12” – 18” incision required for total hip surgery, has been reduced to 3” – 4”. He is on DePuy/Johnson & Johnson Orthopaedics’ elite panel of orthopaedic surgeons that teaches mini incision surgery to other surgeons nationally and internationally. In addition, Dr. Boese is on DePuy’s “International Project” Team to design a hip replacement specifically for the mini incision technique. Dr. Boese completed certification in January 2008 on the Biomet Oxford Partial Knee Replacement procedure. Patients with limited arthritis damage to part of the knee to have this side replaced. This procedure removes 75% less bone cartilage, is less painful, and allows for more rapid recovery than a total knee replacement.
Dr. Abraham, a dual fellowship trained orthopaedic surgeon in both total joint and sports medicine, has many years of experience in total joiont replacement. He is one of the first of a handful of orthopaedic surgeons in the midwest to have been trained in the Biomet Oxford Partial Knee Replacement procedure and has completed many of these in his career both in the United States and in England.
Dr. Panesar, a surgically trained podiatrist, was one of the first in the area to offer total toe replacement for arthritis in that joint. Additionally, he and Dr. Boese are also offering total ankle replacement surgery. Dr. Boese was the first orthopaedic surgeon in Iowa and Nebraska to offer this procedure. Ankle fusion has been the traditional method of treating arthritis of the ankle. However, on selected patients, he and Dr. Panesar are able to perform total ankle replacement instead of ankle fusion.
Theresa Gallo, PA-C, an orthopaedic trained physician assistant, works closely with Dr. Boese and his joint replacement program. Prior to becoming a physician assistant, Theresa was a registered nurse. She held various positions from Emergency Room Charge Nurse, to Operating Room Staff Nurse, to Hospice Clinical Coordinator. Theresa is a tremendous asset to Miller Orthopaedic’s Joint Replacement Team. Theresa will be deploying to Iraq in January 2010 for a six months to serve as a physician's assistant at an established medical facility.
